In Their Shoes is an initiative hosted by KICK which will be taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay in 2016! In Their Shoes started in 2010 & has developed into a nation-wide initiative.

Early 2016, under the banner of KICK, In Their Shoes will be taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay for the third time!

We will have 10 men & women sacrificing their warm, comfortable beds, hot meals & personal comforts to live in Walmer Township, in an attempt to live IN THEIR SHOES for a week.

The volunteers hope to raise awareness of the Education Crisis, the shortage of schools, and in the process raise funds to build the 4 new classrooms at Heatherbank Primary School - a school which caters for children in Walmer Township Community.

The funds raised will initiate the building process, brick by brick - four new classrooms and sporting facilities to accommodate the children from Grade R to Grade 7 at Heatherbank Primary School. The school currently has classes from Grade R to Grade 3. Without the new classes the 2016 Grade 3 class will have nowhere to go in 2017. All of the learners come from Walmer Township where schools in the area are either full or overcrowded.

KICK believes that a good early childhood education is vital in breaking the cycle of poverty in South Africa.  A staggering 74% of South African children between the ages of 0 and 4 years old do not receive any ECD services, contributing to school dropout at a young age.

KICK has partnered with a local accredited training provider, Early Inspiration to provide skills training for ECD Practitioners from Nelson Mandela Bay, many of whom have who have no formal training and are living in underprivileged communities. These practitioners learn the skills necessary to provide sufficient stimulation and development to children in their communities.

With the help of KICK’s corporate sponsors, we have been able to send dozens of practitioners for Early Childhood Development skills training – an education that will make a lasting difference in their own lives as well as the countless children who pass through their classrooms.
